[06_21_16]Chief Justice Yang visits judiciaries of Kazakhstan and Russia

Chief Justice YANG Sung-tae made official visits to Kazakhstan and Russia from Wednesday, June 21 to Sunday, July 3, upon the invitations of Kazakhstan Chief Justice Kairat Mami and Russian Chief Justice Vyacheslav Lebedev.

Chief Justice Yang visited the Supreme Court of Kazakhstan and Constitutional Council in the morning of Friday, June 24 and paid courtesy calls on Chief Justice Kairat Mami and Chairman Rogov Igor, and discussed the ways to expand exchanges between the judiciaries of Korea and Kazakhstan and shared the common understanding on the importance of institutional improvement.

In addition, Chief Justice Yang met with Supreme Court Judge Balken Madiyar, who received Korean government scholarship in 2006 to participate in a one-year invitational training at the Supreme Court of Korea, and witnessed the valuable assistance that the Korean Judiciary’s is making in promoting the judicial exchanges between the two countries and improving the judicial system in Kazakhstan through training programs that Korea provides for foreign judges.

His visit attracted local media attention as well. After the visit to the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Yang had interviews with a Korean-Kazakhstani news anchor Vladislav Choi from the national broadcasting station Khabar TV on strengthening the qualification requirements of judges and electronic litigation system, and with a local English newspaper Astana Times.

In the afternoon of Sunday, June 26, he invited Korean-Kazakhstani people and expressed gratitude for making prominent accomplishments in the country with the proud identity as Koreans and wished for more active exchanges between the two countries.

In the morning of Monday, June 27, Chief Justice Yang visited Constitutional Court of Russia and had a meeting with President Valery Zorkin. With an in-depth discussion on the constitutional trial systems in the two countries, the meeting enhanced mutual understanding on the two judiciaries.

Chief Justice Yang made a visit to the Supreme Court of Russia and paid a courtesy call on Chief Justice Vyacheslav Lebedev on Thursday, June 30. During the meeting of the two countries’ chief justices made in six years of time, the two Chief Justices shared the view on the importance of judiciary’s independence and agreed to expand and strengthen the cooperation and exchanges between the two judiciaries that continued since the 1990s.

The official visits of Chief Justice Yang and meetings with the heads of the judiciaries of Kazakhstan and Russia took on the significance of reaffirming the accomplishments that the Korean Judiciary has made following the efforts to expand international exchanges with the judiciaries of Kazakhstan and Russia and that the visit contributed to promoting the national interest by taking Korean Judiciary’s global stance to the higher level.
