U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Visits Korea

 

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg meets hief Justice YANG Sung-tae. 

 

Upon an invitation of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Korea, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (born in March 15, 1933) of the Supreme Court of the United States of America visits Korea from August 3 to August 7, 2015 for the promotion of judicial exchanges and cooperation between the two Supreme Courts.

 

Justice Ginsburg who was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1993 is the second woman Justice in the U.S. history and currently the eldest sitting Justice. Before her 1993 appointment, she served for thirteen years (1980-1993) on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Earlier, she was a Professor of Law at Columbia Law School. She has devoted her life for the improvement of human rights of minorities and women. Justice Ginsburg is held in great respect by the U.S. people and legal professionals around the world.

 

This visit of the U.S. Supreme Court Justice is made in 28 years since former Justice Sandra O’Connor visited the Supreme Court of Korea in August 1987. It is expected that the visit will further the judicial exchanges between the highest-rank judicial officials of the two countries, in line with the stature and significance of the Supreme Court of Korea and the Supreme Court of the U.S.

 

Justice Ginsburg will visit the Supreme Court of Korea on August 4, 2015 and pay a courtesy call on Chief Justice YANG Sung-tae. On August 5, 2015, she will engage in conversations with Justice KIM So-young before an audience composed of judges, lawyers, trainees of Judicial Research and Training Institute and other legal professionals. The two Justices will talk about the current stature of Supreme Courts in Korea and the U.S., minority protection, human rights and other topics at the Supreme Court Auditorium.

 

Justice Ginsburg will be accompanied by her daughter, a globally prominent copyright and trademark law scholar Professor Jane Ginsburg of Columbia Law School. Professor Ginsburg will participate in a seminar with Korean Intellectual Property law experts along with other events.
