TITLE [12_14_20] Publishing Sign Language Glossary of Legal Terms Used in Criminal Proceedings
ATTACHMENT Publishing Sign Language Glossary of Legal Terms Used in Criminal Proceedings.docx

In legal proceedings, hearing-impaired people have been experiencing communication difficulties, without the availability of standardized expression of some legal sign terminologies and due to the lack of accurate understanding of legal terms during the trial proceedings.

To that extent, the National Court Administration published <Sign Language Glossary of Legal Terms Used in Criminal Proceedings (with video materials)> to provide compilation and explanation of legal terminologies expressed in sign language used in criminal proceedings. By referring to the glossary, hearing-impaired people and sign language interpreters can communicate in accurate signs with standardized legal terminologies, which will remove the barriers to exercising the rights in judicial proceedings.

The glossary provides standard sign language interpretations of vocabularies, phrases and examples that are practically used in criminal proceedings, with detailed explanations on important legal terms. In addition, the glossary also provides photo and video materials of sign gestures.

The glossary will assist the hearing-impaired people and sign language interpreters to accurately understand legal terminologies, which will further enhance effective communication throughout the trials and other judicial proceedings.

The judiciary expects that the glossary will help resolve the difficulties that the hearing-impaired people experienced in the exercise of rights during judicial proceedings.
